From Bruichladdich distillery, comes the sixth release in their heavily peated Cask Exploration series. The nine -year old underwent four years in first-fill bourbon barrels, before spending a further five years in fine Pomerol casks. The single malt expertly balances peat smoke and Islay minerality with fruity and floral notes imparted from the French red wine. Bottled at 54.5% abv, and free from chill filtration.
On the nose, we find waves of peat smoke and red fruits, followed by pear, rose, vanilla, toasted oak and hints of mixed spice. The palate bursts with flavours of malt sugar and bold peat smoke, along with succulent blackberries, plum and aged leather. Maritime notes dominate on the finish, with lingering smoke and a hint of lemon.
